Understanding bring dyslexia self-acceptance
In today´s education environment students are labelled dyslexic and schools think ok we now give them support by sending them to the disability department, but this label itself can cause problems because the label is seen as a negative. I am a believer that the label should be seen as a positive for the students own sake, and that´s why I say dyslexia is a way of thinking.
Students should not just be taught how to read and write, they need to understand what dyslexia is and the positives that come with it. These student often think they fail and believe failure is just around the corner, so it´s important to understand dyslexia as a positive and a way of thinking so the dyslexic can gain self-acceptance. Self-acceptance can help the dyslexic believe in themselves and therefore want to learn.
I believe and know once a dyslexic understands the strategy to help with dyslexia they can start to achieve and build there self-acceptance. If a child is told they are bad and stupid they will do 2 thing, misbehave and do bad work. Teacher need to build belief with dyslexic, constructive critism.
Even if the good is´nt that good, being positive helps the dyslexic feel happier and that means they enjoy learning.
I remember in metal work class, I would make something awful but I was achieving something because I was doing something which the teacher said good work. So teachers need to do this in all classes, this will help to see they are positive about learning.
I believe many of dyslexic problems is in 4 areas:-
- Not understanding what dyslexia is
- Understanding how to use dyslexia strength
- Understanding dyslexia in a positive, as a way of thinking
- Understanding study skills
I believe when a dyslexic does understand or understand a level of itself acceptance they can grow and start to achieve with dyslexia.
